I have not had to touch it in this last storm, which brought 3 feet of snow. I live in a mountain area subject to heavy snow. This antenna out-performs the "heavy duty" ones I have for tv and internet. The antenna is pretty much buried, but has no difficulty pulling a strong signal. Would definitely recommend.
Buy F Jack to SMB Plug Adapter available all over the internet. I had a satellite dish tv antenna change and talked the tech into leaving the old mount. Also buy a supply of compressioncoax connectors. Determinewhich you are receiving by looking at the receiver display(not all receivers have this feature). The prepackagedextensions are WAY too high overpriced. You will need one per inbound to XM receiver. 3.
Learn how to use coax tools. I've installed two of these antennas on our house, and am about to install a third.I've read other reviews on amazon website related to this antenna and will address some of the more frequent comments.1. There is "in the sky" satellite transmission as well as terrestial repeaters that broadcast the XM signal. The best way to mount this antenna is on a J wall mount. I have had no issues with the boot.4. This is where it helps to have an XM receiver integrated into a receiver component - mine has a video out that displays channels and which kind of signal is being received. The point is that you might have more antenna placement options than you think. If you tinker with electronic components you will eventually save yourselfbuying premade cables. It's difficult to distinguish the male and female versions because of the smallscale size.
2. I recommend buying compression tool and coax stripper sold under the Ideal brand in Home Depot. Having looked at some aftermarket satellite splitter kits - not all of them will work and many don't state whether they are for video satellite orSiriusXM reception. I have hooked two receivers to a single antenna but without an XM approved splitter. Rural users like me relyon the sky signal.5.
Make sure you look carefully at an illustrationof exactly what the jack looks like. Lube the cable with WD40 and slide it on prior to terminating the connection. If you can't do that a glob of silicon will seal the connection as well. Buy your own coax(RG6 Quad shield) from a supplier online or in your area. It is cheaper to put up an additional antenna rather than buy a splitter with XM approved cicuitry.
The receivers have a sensitive antenna check circuit that receives the signal but signals "check antenna" constantly IF both are powered up simultaneously. At this review the market price is $38 for the Terk XM6.6. Go online and setup an account to manage your account and get rehits on receivers. This allows adjustment and groundingthe mount.
DO NOT use the old style crimp fittings - too much trouble and not reliable. Ours get daily use.7. There are endless comments on the outdoor boot.Note: the boot is designed to be installed prior to terminating thecoax end. For uber purists there is overpriced silicon lubrication for this kind of thing as well.
Remember that it's best to leave the units on at least 20 continuous minutes per month to keep the receiver unlocked.
I had a marginal xm signal.the terk xm6 gives me strong signal setup inside my house.
I had the unit for a little over 1 year but it wasn't un-packageduntil about 2 weeks ago. I recently tried to connect my XM6 antenna and found it isn't working.I've contacted Terk by email and will up-date my review once I seem what they will do.So for now it gets only 1-Star.2009.11.24 : UpdateI emailed customer support and all they said was to call the 800 number.Called Tech Support and they immediately told me the unit was defectiveand bounced me over to customer support. We went back and forth for about 15-20 minutesmost of the time I was on hold. Since the 1 year period was over they would not honor their warrantyand the person suggested I just buy a new unit. This is not good customer support.I will avoid this product/company in the future.
Very easy to install and works excellent. My work area is in a low point of a narrow canyon and by placing this on the highest point of the roof I can now enjoy XM radio again.
